Blind Redemption
Blind Redemption
I really enjoyed watching Rebels, I’ve binged through it at least 4x. It’s a really refreshing re-imagining of SW while at the same time being a really cool revisiting of so many of the OG concept ideas from the original trilogy. I’ve been wanting to do my take on Kanan Jarrus’ hilt for quite some time and finally got a chance to give it a shot. It has a really cool industrial tool kind of feel to it. I think the original design went out of it’s way to blend in, Kanan definitely wasn’t trying to broadcast who he was, but I wanted to show what I think it might have looked like if he wasn’t in hiding. I etched the symbol on his shoulder armor into the back of the emitter. I figured after the loss of his sight it would be a cool tactile way for him to feel closer to his hilt.
CONSTRUCTION/CUSTOMIZATION
All my hilts are designed with a steel threaded rod running down the middle for structural stability as well as working with the emitter/pommel(each have a sunken steel bolt) to combine the unit. The ends twist on, allowing the owner to customize the order of the components, their orientation and swap in new parts at any time down the road.(last pic in gallery shows swapped in parts)
WEIGHT = 14 oz
LENGTH = 12.5 inches
WIDTH = 1.5 inches at grip 2.75 at the cross guard
FYI/CYA DISCLAIMER
The following is a fictional break down of the physical features of the hilt. These are the features I envisioned while I was designing it. Sadly the hilt will not actually produce a cutting blade and is made of resin, not metal.)
THE GOODS
Emitter/Shield- This is a first for me, an inner emitter surrounded by a perforated central shield and then covered with a partial outer emitter. There’s a lot going on here but I really like the layer look of a 3 part emitter array and will definitely be doing something like this again in the future.
Switch Assembly - Another component that is unique to this hilt compared to my regular style, a big beefy switch located in the grip area. Super industrial looking and hard to miss. A second ignition switch rides right above the grip.
Guard - I really like the big bold feel of the hand guard on this design. Really breaks up the angular lines of the rest of the saber.
Couplers- Pretty much nothing about this hilt is standard and that echos in the singular coupler(usually I do a double) This one sits right above the ignitor switch and adds a bit of neck to the upper part of the hilt.
Main Grip- Super dominant, usually the emitter is more the star of hilt but this grip has a very solid part of the visual appeal. The front features a dark green armor and the back has a fluted area for additional traction.
Pommel - I always look at lightsabers like sentences, the emitter is the first capital letter, the body of the statement is the spacers, switch and grip and the pommel is the punctuation. To me this one feels like a big bold exclamation symbol.
OPTIONS - This hilt is available in two forms.
Raw Resin Kit - fresh out of the print vat, will need a small amount of sanding(the beauty of resin printing vs pla, incredibly smooth surfaces right off the printer and super easy to sand. I will give it a once-over and remove any small support burns or uneven surfaces so you’re all ready to prime and paint.
Turn around time - Parts are printed per order and average print time per hilt is 12 to 16 hours. Should ship within 7-10 days of order.
OR!
Premiere Display - This piece will be given my utmost level of attention and detail, sanded, primed and painted. It will come with a certificate of authenticity card which will include the Soupcan13 badge of quality as well as my signature and will include its run number(I plan on doing a total of 200 in this run). My painting process includes, all parts deburred and sanded, priming, airbrushing the base coat, applying color coats, masking and applying secondary detail colors, detail painting, black wash/corrosion wash and finally 3 coats of high quality clear coat to protect from chips, scratches and prevent paint from wearing due to handling.
Turn around time - Parts are painted per order and average paint time per hilt is 6 to 8 hours. Should ship within 15-18 days of order.
